SARITA MARIA ABEYESUNDERE
Sarita Abeyesundere, is a Singapore-based artist, born in Sri Lanka. She was trained at the Shyamala School of Art (Sri Lanka, 2019-2021) and received a distinction in Edexcel Advanced level Fine Art. She is currently pursuing her BA(HONS) degree in Fine Art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Sarita is deeply inspired by her motherland, Sri Lanka; her history, narratives and female communities.
She has showcased at ‘Impressions’ an exhibition by the Shyamala School of Art (2019), she participated in the largest community painting hosted by the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka to raise awareness on ecocide (2020). Her work ‘Threads of Life’ was exhibited at ‘Theoria, Poiesis,_’ the year one debut exhibition, ‘Flagship Genius' an exhibition at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Gallery in NAFA (2023) and was the subject for her academic presentation at the Sri Sury International Conference (2022).
Her practice aims to converge strength, tradition, interconnections and femininity. ‘Threads of Life’ explored female weaving communities in Sri Lanka. Weaving and textile have informed her practice and are seen as gestures of passing down tradition and time, becoming pivotal expressions of identity and community.
Her recent works have explored working in artist collectives and external stakeholders. The amalgamation of practices gave rise to anecdotes of human intricacies that reflect the world we live in.
She worked collaboratively with the Singapore Council Of Women's Organizations, addressing its space as one in which women can foster a sense of community. She was a part of 'The Archivers' artist collective that worked in collaboration with Assisi Hospice. The project encapsulated a mapping of the life of Sister Eucharia showcasing a glimpse into a life of faith.
She hopes to bring to light, through the means of creative expression, human connection and experiences; sacrifice, pain and change. Her current artistic inquiries reflect the civil war that ensnared Sri Lanka, post-colonialism, the Tamil diaspora, the burning of knowledge and the notion of visible and invisible traces. As a young artist she feels compelled and moved to be heard. She hopes to memorialize what once was in the hopes of moving forward through the bridging of communities.
