Threads of Life’ encompasses a creative work primarily of loom-threads and print media stemming from an inquiry into the exploration of communal weaving within my Motherland, Sri Lanka. The dynamism and strength of these communities is showcased through a knotting and binding process which is evident in the work.

Weaving has been integral to Sri Lanka’s history, beginning with Kuveni, a native Yaksha tribe Princess spinning cotton. This dynamic tradition has shapeshifted alongside the ways of the island, her conflicts, social segregations, colonization and more.

The centrality of women within this shared activity, as gestures of passing down tradition and time, becomes pivotal expressions of identity and community. Each in connection to one another within the larger eco-system. In the wake of this realization, it recognizes the compelling nature of bringing to light these communities. Communities so tightly knit; supporting, sustaining, and interconnecting with one another.

Through the act of binding newspaper from home with threads representing symbolic traditional colours of handloom weaving, knots are braided as visual and metaphorical representations of sustaining this legacy. A legacy that exposes the turbulent social gaps, marginalized voices and vanishing collective memories. This work aims to reimagine the rhythm of a familiar ecologythrough thinking and making
